MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame – USA 0

We made it to down to Joliet, IL and are staying in a small campground at the Empress Casino. Its an interesting little park, with a smattering of greenery and nice large sites. The casino is across the parking lot, and the hotel is adjacent to the campground. The driveway up to the property has really neat landscaping in the form of cards and dice made out of stone and flower arrangements. Quite clever, indeed. Were right near the entrance so we can watch all the comings and goings. I feel like Mrs. Kravitz!

After getting settled, we ventured over to my cousin Shelleys house. Shelley, Ramon and Joyce are Uncle Rays kids. I havent seen Shelleys oldest kids since they were babies, when I came to visit back in the mid-90s, and theres more of them since then! She and her husband, Joe, took in his sisters kids and raised them along with theirs, so they have a house full of teenagers. Now before you freak out, lemme tell you that I have never met that many kids that age who were so well-mannered and friendly! And it wasnt just an act, these kids are so refreshingly normal! Joyces youngest son, Kevin, was also there visiting. How cool that they all hang out together! I always wished we had lived closer to our cousins so we could have all grown up together. Charlie, Joyces oldest, wasnt there, so hes the only one I didnt get to meet. All of these kids are on the honor roll and college bound. They are all involved in extra-curricular activities and arent even thinking about getting into any trouble. Shelly, Joe and Joyce have done a marvelous job raising them in this urban area. It just goes to show that it can be done! I had a great time talking to them and hearing abut what theyre all doing or aspiring to do. And they all have such great grammar! My faith in younger generations has been restored! I look forward to following their development into adulthood. Mark my words, one of them, if not all of them, will be successful individuals in time. We ended up getting some pizzas and wings and just hanging out. Though we invited them to join us at the Cubs game, theyre White Sox fans, so they declined. Ya gotta love that team loyalty! Too bad the owners dont feel the same way as the fans! (Yes, Im still ticked about the Nick Swisher trade! And I will be for quite some time!) We left but will be getting together again before we leave. Hopefully Joyce can join us next time. I cant believe I didnt get a group shot of everybody. Ill have to have Shelley take one and send it to me.

Rick and MaryAnne, Just wanted to say thanks so much for driving down to Olympia and visiting for lunch. It is most assuredly a highlight of my summer. I am sorry to say that making it down for the Oakland game is not going to work for me. Just can’t find a flight I can afford after paying for my recent vacation. I will come down and visit just as soon as I can. Love you guys.

Erikah and Naomi really liked the campgrounds and especially the motor home – they were ready to get real comfortable when we got back from our walk and time at the playground and the lake. Thanks for everything! Now, MaryAnne and Rick, y’all know the best ethnic food is at the stands and not in the restaurants! You should have tried Cuban food from the stand instead of the gussied up stuff. Real tamales rock!

Rick & MaryAnne – I finally had some time to sit down and read your Blog. I wish I had looked it up sooner – turns out Linda & I were in Phoenix the same days you were. As a matter of fact some of our friends from the SAE meeting went to the ball park the same evening that you did. Life is full of missed opportunities, but this one hurts. From Phoenix we went to San Antonio. What a beatiful town, especially the river walk. Linda got to go to the Alamo. You will have to put it on your agenda for future travels.Do you know when you will be hitting the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati? The Grote family is related to the owners of the Reds. They have a suite at the park and some seats near the first base dugout, if there aren’t customers in town, maybe I can get tickets so we can go to the game together.I am enjoying the journal and photos. Be safe out there

Hey MAD – I have been gone to a conference and just got caught up on your exploits! I must tell you that I TOTALLY have to disagree with you on the Dodger Dog – when Leo and I went 2 years ago, they were the bomb!! Had one before the game and went back for seconds in the 4th inning!! I am so jazzed that you are having a great time. Keep us posted and enjoy every moment!

I agree with your comments about players being traded all over the league all the time. The Mariners held onto Edgar Martinez his whole career and that was great. You get to feel like they are homeboys and a part of the sports community. I wish we could have held on to Griffey and Rodriguez but that almighty dollar calls. At least we still have Ichiro!
