Hi there. Tom found your blog on his computer, so I am updated on your excursion. I have to say, we didn’t stay in a tent when we went on the ferry! I think your experience is a little more, shall we say, interesting? Ann

Paul, — pleased to hear that the mysticism of the Far East has a connection to this dimension, however we’ve heard through the grapevine that the realities of the more mundane Western statistical sciences have caught up with you. We’re all disappointed to know that we’ll still have to cruise the lake on your inflatable yacht, but none of us have sailed the seas of Vegas. You have been our avant garde, our captain of the Enterprise, one who has dared to follow the footsteps of Thompson and Acosta. (Head out to NLV and go to the pharmacy next to the Food City for the ether.) Alas, Wednesday night is passing us with only, actually a few decent wines, an Italian Pinot Grigio, so I shouldn’t say only, but only ethanol, not ether or anything more exotic than the King of the Caribbean Belizean Stew that Dirk is cooking up for the Salmon Fest. So now you know what you’re missing here in Cordova. (Becky told me to leave off Assbrain.) OK. I’m going to finish off the wine — Paso Robles for a wine tour for the New Year? — and stop this babbling and let Dirk and Becky call it a night, even though Bert and I filleted the fish and deserve a good drunk. We’re proud of you. Ken, and guilty by association at the Slough House, Dirk, Becky, and Bert.

Hey Paul:
Glad to hear you’re hanging on – good luck. If there’s anything TV and movies have taught me it’s that you need a little setback to get the mojo working. Treat yourself to a little training montage and get back out there!

Hey Paul! That sounds like an adventuresome morning of boat travel. I found that 90% of the time, we weren’t getting screwed but a few times we ran into similar situations where you were stuck and someone had a great opportunity to swindle some money out of you, and they did so under the premise of being helpful, with a huge smile. I guess what bugs me about the situation is it engenders a culture of screwing another person cause you can and creates ill will. People end up spending all there time and mental energy trying to protect the resources they have rather than share. I think in the end these little acts of fiscal self-determination undermine people’s basic trust in other people and creates a world that has bars on the windows, obstructing the view and keeping the “haves” inside and the “havenots” wielding crow bars.

Marie.
Sound like you are enjoying your stay. I agree with your version of hapiness. I don’t think the material world is what makes us happy, but many people feel if they just had this one thing that would do it. People can have very little and still be happy, probably more so than people that have alot. Take Care.

Good grief . . . are these worth it? Sounds like something I would not do! But, I can hardly stand a regular old back rub. I playing catch up with your blog. My fingers are so cold I can barely type. We are getting down to -17 tonight. Computer is right by the window and I can feel the draft. Enjoy being warm!

Nice blog. I enjoy hearing your thoughts; your travels are approached much differently from mine and I like reading about a side of Thailand I didn’t see. Cool story about Bong. I, too, was never allowed to kick anyone in the nuts when I was younger. Any birds around”A.L.

When you return to Bankok, check out the Temple of the Emerald Buddha if you have time. It’s worth the visit. Just remember, photographs aren’t allowed of the Emerald Buddha. Everything else inside the gates is OK to photograph. There is a mural that goes around the walls that shows a Thai version of ancient history. It shows Thai people coming out from underground, and shows how their civilization progressed including great battles and other highlights. It’s real interesting, but it’s easier to understand with a local explaining it to you. There is a Royal museum in the same compound that has some old crowns jewelry and stuff and pictures of ancient monarchs. Hope you find some peace up-country.
