Hello Friends,This past week we drove the lake and mountain strewn Route 258 from Bariloche to El Bolson. El Bolson enjoys a microclimate on the 42nd parallel which allows farmers to produce an amazing amount of fruit (mmm, raspberries), nuts and nearly 75% of the entire county’s hops. Our hosts for the evening made the most of the fertile soil by growing nut and fruit trees on the property. They also had a bit of a farm with free roaming chickens, geese, and a dog. It was a delight for our s to collect walnuts and chase the chickens with the dog. As we toured the Feria Artesenal (art fair) we met people from all over Central and South America selling hand crafted items made from wood, clay, gourds, leather and all manner of weavings. Although the town itself did not rank high in architectural charm like Swiss influenced San Martin de los Andes or Villa Angostura, the surroundings are stunning. Towering over El Bolson is the dramatic ridge of Cerro Piltriquitron, and only a short drive away is Lago Puelo where we spent most of our day on the beach and wandering the trails.
