Jess is a Wanderer at Waitomo Caves

Jess is a Wanderer ventured down to Waitomo Caves for the adventure of a lifetime. Waitomo Adventures offer an Epic Lost World 7 hour tour. It’s the perfect way to spend a rainy day – if you’ve got some serious dollar spare as it’s not the cheapest activity but it’s worth every penny.

The first task is to abseil 100m down into the abyss of the lost world cave. It really does look like a fairytale world or something as it’s this misty, murky hole beneath the earth’s surface.

The second part is to admire your surroundings and learn about the different rock formations that make up the corridor which you’re about to spend the next few hours scrambling, crawling, jumping, splashing and swimming through.

The guides have loads of top spots for photos, jumping into pools of water, climbing waterfalls and crawling through narrow grottos to keep you entertained. Sadly I wasn’t brave enough to do the voluntary jump from rock ledge into pool and I wasn’t strong enough to climb up the raging waterfall. Still, I did manage to crawl through the tiny cavern and drop into the depths below in pitch black. Woop!

Best of all, the last part of the adventure is a grotto filled with glow worms. Headtorches off, lying down on the rocks and looking at the ‘stars’ it really feels like you’re outside looking at the universe unfolding above. It’s crazy! Finally, they provide a delicious barbecue at the end of the experience. Also, they provide all photos for free. Isn’t that a bonus!
