Jess is a Wanderer on Mount Tauhara

Jess is a Wanderer headed out in search of adventure in the form of a little 1088m high mountain just outside of Taupo. A 1.5 hour climb up, the views are truly spectacular once you conquer the exceptionally steep bush trail.

This was actually one of the most testing hikes I’ve done so far in New Zealand. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t anything like trekking around Everest back in November but it was a struggle! Despite being hard-going, with little flat stretches, it is a rewarding experience. Particularly because of the photo opportunities offered at the top. And the knowledge of the five million calories you burned getting to the top…

From Taupo, follow the signs for Huka Falls and less than 10km away you’ll eventually get to ‘Mountain Road’. Go all the way to the end and you’ll come to a small car park that backs onto private farm land. Climb over the style and follow the trail up the hill. A 7km round trip, it takes on average two hours to get to the top and 90 minutes to get back down. Be prepared for a slow and steady climb across boulders, through narrow gullies and on some slippery, muddy terrain in parts. Take plenty of water as the open areas will make you sweat. Then again, so will the muggy bush areas too. And just the whole walk in general!
