Jess is a Wanderer drove along State Highway 43 from Stratford to Taumaranui (over two or three different trips) to explore New Zealand’s famous Forgotten World Highway.

The highway has some of the most scenic views I’ve seen across the almost 10,000km that I’ve driven around the north island of this fabulous country. From sprawling fields to sun-kissed hills and quaint railway tracks – this road will not disappoint.

You can even stop in the tiny village of Whangamomona and get your passport stamped at the Whangamomona Hotel with a special keepsake stamp for a $2 donation.

Even if it’s a bit out of your way, you should definitely take a drive along some part of the road because you just never know what you might find.

We veered off the road on to Moki Road and found ourselves on course to find Mount Damper Falls. A short 45 minute stroll across farmland through a Jurassic Park like bush area to the spectacular waterfall at the end of the trail. It really was magical!
