Must see spots in Springfield, Illinois area. Home of Abraham Lincoln. 1. Abraham Lincoln Museum. Check out their web site. Very impressive, and reasonable in price. The Abraham Lincoln Library is accross the street. Great place for real Lincoln afficionados and scholars. 2. Abraham Lincoln home. Where he lived when he became president. 3. Abraham Lincoln Law Office. Where he practiced law. 4. Abraham Lincoln Memorial. Where he is buried. 5. New Salem. A large group of log cabins with guides to tell you about the area, and its history. On the banks of the Sangamon River. He moved here after a terrible winter spent just west of Decatur, IL. He canoed from the Lincoln Homestead. (see 6). There are sometimes Plays about Lincoln at a theatre on site. He lived here until he became a lawyer in Springfield. He ran a business and worked as a postal clerk. He wrestled the Clanton gang leader, and won his respect. He split rails, and was known as The Railsplitter. He piloted a barge of lumber to New Orleans from here. Check out their web site. May want to see: 6. There is a beautiful park on the Sangamon river about 27 miles west of Springfield. It is called the Lincoln Homestead. His family moved farther south in Illinois at that time.
