Shoestringing Sea To Sea – Canada 25

Well, we managed to avoid the bomb scare on the BC ferry, but still ran into a similar situation on this side of thecountry. What a world we live in! I’m writing this blog at about 6 am on the Marine Atlantic ferry, the Caribou. Whilewe had booked the midnight ferry, a bomb hoax in Sydney, Nova Scotia delayed all the ferries and pushed us to a5 am departure instead. Here’s how our day unfolded.

Monday, July 30:

Massey’s bold statement for today: “Bullwinkle, where are you?”

After laundry and chores at the park, we began our 4 1/2 hour trip back to Port-aux-Basques just after lunch. Normand Pat – you should be proud of us! With all that time to spare, we decided to stop and take one of the dozens ofhiking trails before leaving Gros Morne Park. The Southeast Brook Falls walk was lovely, with a forest floor of brilliantgreen and bakeapples galore. The trees were thick, but bare until a burst of foliage appeared at the top. Manybroken branches littered the ground, and Massey speculated that these were caused by moose. But the only evidencewe saw of moose in the area were there droppings. We reached the top of the falls to see water cascading down severalterraces of red and black rocks. The whole walk was quite lovely and we wished we had time to venture onto more ofthe trails. However, the black flies were brutal, so it was somewhat of a relief to get back into the car and get ready fora few more days of scratching.
