Welcome to the Journey: Exploring South Africa’s Hidden Gems
I used to run an airbnb in Johannesburg and had many guests from all around the world, many of them visiting South Africa for the first time. I asked them where they were travelling to and the itenary of the majority of them was firstly to visit the Kruger National Park, then fly to Port Elizabeth, hire a car and drive along the Garden Route to Cape Town and either fly back home from Cape Town or fly back home via Johannesburg. It seemed such a pity that many of the tourists didn’t know and don’t know about the beautiful places in South Africa so I decided to write this blog about these hidden gems.
Firstly, for those of you who don’t know where South Africa is, it is the most southern country on the continent of Africa situated between the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of 9 provinces, the smallest and most populated is Gauteng, a highly urbanised region and the largest is the Northern Cape, a vast, arid and empty region which takes up almost a third of South Africa’s total land area.
South Africa is a land of contrasts, where the wild beauty of nature meets vibrant cultures and rich history. From the vast savannas teeming with wildlife to the bustling streets of cosmopolitan cities, it offers a kaleidoscope of experiences waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re drawn to the iconic Big Five on a thrilling safari, the stunning landscapes of the Garden Route, or the rich heritage of the townships, South Africa is a destination that captivates and inspires.
In this blog, I’ll take you on a journey through the heart of South Africa. Together we’ll explore the hidden gems, share travel tips, and uncover the stories behind the people and places that make this nation so unique. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or planning your first visit, join me as we delve into the rich tapestry of South Africa – a land where adventure, beauty, and culture come together in unforgettable ways.
So, pack your bags, grab your camera, and let’s embark on a journey through this country you’ll never forget!
Your first stop will most probably be at OR Tambo International Airport, located in Johannesburg and is South Africa’s largest and busiest airport, serving as the primary gateway to the country for international and domestic travellers. After a much needed rest it’s time to go and see what the city of Johannesburg has to offer. But before you leave I would like to tell you a little about Johannesburg. It is South Africa’s biggest city and the capital of the Gauteng province. It was founded in 1886 when gold was discovered, began as a gold mining settlement which has grown into a world class city and home to the Johannesburg Stock exchange (JSE), the largest on the continent of Africa and 16th biggest in the world. It’s sprawling Soweto (South Western Township) was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela’s former residence is now known as the Mandela House Museum.
A tour of Soweto is a must. It offers a rich array of experiences for visitors. You can explore the dynamic street art and cultural murals that bring the local history and struggles to life. A visit to the Apartheid Museum provides a profound insight into South Africa’s past. For a taste of local flavour, the bustling Vilakazi Street is home to a hub of culinary delights and vibrant street culture, offering a dynamic mix of street vendors and restaurants. Here, you can savour authentic South African dishes from local vendors who serve everything from succulent bunny chow to flavorful kota and grilled meats. The street’s lively atmosphere is enhanced by the rich aromas wafting from food stalls, where traditional flavours and modern twists create a feast for the senses. Popular restaurants on Vilakazi Street, like the renowned Vilakazi Street Restaurant, provide a sit-down experience with dishes like braai (barbecue) and traditional stews, all while offering a glimpse into the heart of Soweto’s community life. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite from a street vendor or enjoying a leisurely meal, Vilakazi Street captures the essence of South Africa’s diverse and vibrant food culture. Don’t eat too much though as the next stop is the Soweto Towers or perhaps you should go and see this prominent landmark before you visit the restaurants.
The Soweto Towers which were originally built as cooling towers for the nearby power station, have been transformed into an iconic adventure site, featuring bungee jumping that attracts thrill-seekers from around the world. The bungee jump offers an exhilarating experience with breathtaking views of Soweto and the surrounding area, as the leap from the towers provides an adrenaline rush unlike any other.
When at last you manage to drag yourself away from Vilakazi Street and your tummy is not too full or you have regained your strength in your wobbly legs after the bungee jump, I would recommend a tour of Johannesburg using the red hop-on, hop-off tour buses.(If your tummy is too full or your legs to wobbly, book a tour for the following day when you feel more comfortable). These buses offer a convenient and informative way to explore Johannesburg’s diverse attractions and provide a flexible sightseeing experience, allowing passengers to disembark at various key locations, such as the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill (which you would’ve seen when you toured Soweto) before re-boarding when ready to continue your journey. With informative commentary on board, travellers gain valuable insights into Johannesburg’s rich history, culture, and landmarks. The buses typically run on a loop, making it easy to plan your day and visit multiple destinations at your own pace as well as a comprehensive and hassle-free way to experience Johannesburg’s highlights.
If you are interested in archeology then about 36 km or 22 miles from Johannesburg is the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is one of the most significant paleoanthropological sites in the world. This remarkable area encompasses a series of limestone caves and fossil beds that have yielded an extensive collection of early hominid remains. The site, dating back around 4 million years, has provided crucial evidence about human evolution, including the discovery of *Australopithecus africanus*, famously known as “Mrs. Ples,” and other important fossils. The region’s extensive network of caves, such as Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai, continue to be a hotspot for researchers studying the origins of early human ancestors. Visitors to the Cradle of Humankind can explore the Maropeng Visitor Centre, which offers interactive exhibits and engaging displays that vividly illustrate the story of human evolution. Additionally, guided tours of the fossil sites and caves provide a fascinating glimpse into the geological and archaeological processes that have shaped our understanding of human history. The Cradle of Humankind not only offers a profound connection to our distant past but also presents an opportunity to reflect on the incredible journey of human evolution.
After visiting Monte Casino you could either head back to your accommodation or you could make use of the luxury accommodation at the Tsogo Sun Monte Casino Palazzo Hotel. But, if you still have energy left then do yourself a favour and take an Uber or Bolt ride to Sandton City and the adjacent Nelson Mandela Square, it’s only about 12 km (7.5 miles) from Monte Casino.
