Tuesday-Friday, Kuta, Bali, Indonesia We booked our hotel in advance and were glad we did, because of the late arrival, but in daylight discovered that this is a one nighter place (Berlian Inn – avoid if possible). It was a little grungy and as we soon discovered, expensive for what we got. We headed out in the morning to check out other possibilties and found a nice place just around the corner (Kedin’s Inn). It had a nice pool with beautiful garden, a clean new room with a fan, two beds and a nice restaurant, breakfast included for about $9/nt. US. Yes!!!! Kuta is a surfer’s town and the place was crawling with surfer dudes and beach babes (and us) and all kinds of surfer stuff. It has a decent beach to learn to surf and saw Dad’s teaching kids with water wings how to surf. The town is rather touristy and not very interesting, but Ted had an article to complete (see more work) and they did have good internet cafes at $1.20/hour. So, we spent 4 days here enjoying the sun and getting some work done. Kuta is where the Bali terrorist bombings in 2002 and 2005 took place. They have a memorial built near the location of one of the 2002 bombing sites that commemorates the 202 people from 22 countries that were killed. There are also some big resorts along the beach and LOTS of people selling stuff that you will never need… massages, taxis, peeled fruit, taxis, condos, taxis, sarongs, taxis, jewelry, taxis, hair braiding, etc. all within 10 minutes. Paper got done, time to move on. We were anxious to get to Ubud, (pronounced oobood) the quintessential Balinese location.
